I am booting from the HD5-IF floppy, which is supposed to be different. During boot, after S550 Initialize it checks the connection, and says "Harddisk Parking", nothing like SCSI Check. I assume this is a false error, since later on I constantly get errors even connecting.
Thanks.

Place a www.chickensys.com/translator/bugreports Bug Report, this is a good time to do it.

Thanks.
I think perhaps eBay is getting so ubiquitous and people so familiar, that people use eBay as a junk pile and start forgetting that what they send out actually has to be legit. Still, it's an expensive mistake - you have to pay for shipping back to you. This guy responded quickly and even gave me his phone number. I appreciate the honesty, but it still strikes me as weird that the unit was so problematic yet he said it was fully functional.
Regarding misrepresentation, I've noticed for years that people consistently call ZipDrives "SCSI" on eBay even if it is a parallel port version. Although it's a waste of time, I ping these ads and tell them to eliminate the word "SCSI" from their ad. But it happens ALL THE TIME. I wonder how many people, wanting a SCSI Zip, get a parallel port instead. I know I have calls for service where the person is unaware. It's the same port, DB25, but the seller should know better. Again, it's the use of eBay as a glorified Recycling Center.
>I really think it's a problem with the HD5 SCSI Interface, even though the S550 tests it successfully. Maybe the output jack is faulty. Shoot, I was looking forward to this. I got it off eBay, with a included the CD-ROM Drive, but it came and the CD-ROM Drive didn't even work, an the S550 floppy didn't even work. I think it was sent completely untested - bad form. The seller did respond to me right away after I complained, but he never shouldn't have tried to sell it like this.

What SCSI ID is the S550 set to? The manual doesn't say. And how do you determine what SCSI ID to set your drive to? Does the S550 just look through all the ID's (except it's own, obviously) and show which it finds? (Like the S760?)
Also, does anyone use ZipDrives with their S550? I know someone who finds it successful with the W30, and I think that uses the same HD5 SCSI board.
Lastly, has anyone attempted to reverse the board and make new ones? It's a shame so many S550's don't have the board on them.

Actually, most of what he lists - though it's NOT for S550, it's for S7x and later, strangely - are common CD-ROM Drives. Nevertheless, the Zip should work, I had plenty of people tell me they use a Zip. But it doesn't. I think the SCSI Interface is funky, I'm going to try some other things.

It shouldn't matter these days.

I think these are all hidden from me, since the S550 can't even communicate with the drives.

We have plenty here, but I think the main problem is the SCSI interface maybe funky in some way.

Are you trying to convert S550 stuff into other formats? It should work. If not, send the S550 files in question.

Right, I'm using a monitor.

Hello,
just saw that this USB Drive
USB FAT32 720KB SSD Floppy Drive Emulator For Machine Control
http://r.ebay.com/IzmFyK
was successfully used to replace the floppy drive in Yamaha SY99
synthesizers.
A handmade cable adapter was necessary though.
I wonder if anyone tried to use this to replace the floppy drive in a
Roland S330 or S550.
Thanks,
Franz
