I believe the best thing to do, which happens to be the right thing is
to e-mail them and ask permission. State how much you like them, how
you want to use them, and possible limit of use and credit, and see
what they say. They might end up giving you access to the original
higher quality samples before it was converted to be used on the web
site.

Is there obvious copyright infringement here? Those
samples are not
for-sale samples you can buy to use royalty free. We're not putting
them up on another web site to sell cymbals and compete with Zildjian.
We'd be putting in the time (well, you have) to download them and
convert them to add to our non-commercial music.
I believe it's perfectly legal to sample a snare hit or an orchestra
hit from somebody else's record and use it in your own music. I think
it has to be a substantial sample to require getting the artist's
permission and citing the source on your recording. Isn't taking a
sound sample from Zildjian's or Musician's Friend's web site like
taking a sample of a snare hit or a cymbal crash from a Prince record?
Am I wrong?

I ripped 37 stereo (44k16) samples from the
Zildijan website (K and K
custom cymbals). It took... a long time, but I've imported the
samples into Halion and it sounds really good.
I'm willing to share my samples (regardless of the obvious
intellectual rights infringement here). If you're interested, I need
somewhere to temporarily put it up. The zip is 24 megs.
No, I'm not going to email this stuff. Don't even ask.
btw, the mp3's at musiciansfreind were all mono. That sucks.

If you go to any cymbal page there's usually
a sound clip or two on
the page. Even if you can't download these clips directly from
there you can usually find the clip on somebody else's page. For
example, I really like the sound of this cymbal:
http://www.zildjian.com/en-US/products/productDetail.ad2?
catalogID=1013&typeID=13&productID=1266
You can find these same sound clips on a music store page selling
this cymbal, so here's the Musician's Friend page featuring those
same clips for easy download:
