David,
I believe the R-8 allowed for expansion cards, such as 808 909, etc. The R-5 was as is...

Subject: [sgroup] Roland R-8 vs R-5 drum machine question.
Does anyone remember the difference between the R8 and the R5? Were the
pads on the R5 just as good? Also, anyone know the dimensions of the
R-5? It's width and length?
Thanks in advance,
David A. Roth

Hi folks,
I'm Chris, an EE from Oxford in England and the proud owner of a JS-30
(which arrived alst week) and an S750 (which arrived today).... I got them
cos I used to won an S770 and although I never used it for much I remembered
how much I liked the way it sounded also I loved the monitor output/mouse
combo for editing on it. ANyway... plea/question time...
My S750 has come with several OS disks up to version 1.06. WHat is the
latest (or best if different) OS for the S750 and can anyone in
Oxford/Abingdon/Didcot/Wantage/Witney let me copy there's... I can drop
round this evening with the unit to copy the disk ....
also does anyone know if sdiskw will work with USB floppy drives cos my
laptop doesn't have an onboard floppy..... aslo is there a hack to put an
internal SCSI device in the S750?... I was thinking of getting a SCSI
flash-card reader of some description and sticking a 64Mb card in there as I
would hope it'll be more reliable than a small (old) harddrive..
BTW JS-30's seem to be happy using Panasonic PD-drives as hard-drives (mine
certainly sat there last night adn formatted one cheerfully enough) has
anyone ever got a PD to work as both an MO and a CDROM simultaenously using
the LUN switching or is that beyond the SCSI spec of an S-series?
It didn't want to know about a 4Gb Micropolis I tried it with (bit on the
big side I guess) but was happy with a truly ancient 160Mb Quantum....
Am I right in thinking that as long as I change the ID on one of the
samplers then I could plug them both into the same drive as long as they
don't simultaneously try to access it?...

to quote Chris Crosskey:
=> Might just stick DOS on a junkyard old Pentium I've got kicking around
=> somewhere and stick an oldish Adaptec card in it to get the best of all
=> worlds..... a lot of hassle though compared to dropping roudn soemone elses
=> house and copying one disk .....
I would imagine that the probability of an sgroup list member being
anywhere physically near to you would be pretty slim. I would not be
surprised if I was the closest to you (I'm in Dublin)
Dunno why you would need an adaptec card to copy one disk though... All
you need to do is create a bootable dos disk and boot from it with yer old
pentium, assuming it has an ide floppy in it.
If you're really stuck and can't get sorted, drop me an email off list
with your address and I'll post out a copy of V2.25 to you on floppy.
Nic.
I didn't have any luck using sdiskw with a USB zip drive, but that's not to say it can't be done. I'd love to hear other people's suggestions. Coincidentally, Chris, I just returned to the states from Oxford (Dorchester-on-Thames, actually)
Good Luck,
declan
