to quote Chris Crosskey:

=> they don't simultaneously try to access it?...
Yep, that should work. I don't see why you couldn't access (for read at
least) a drive from more than one device. The SCSI protocol (I think)
should permit this as I think it is stateless? Someone more versed in SCSI
might be able to confirm/deny.
I can't give a definite answer from the spec, but I can confirm that I
have read SCSI drives from more than one device. I have shared a SCSI
Zip disk between two PCs, and have definitely accessed a sampler-formatted
SCSI disk from both the sampler and PC. So it should be pretty safe as
long as you don't attempt to write to the disk from more than one device.
Assuming they both use the safe disk format, of course. I'm not familiar
with the JS-30.
Chris Crosskey:
I was thinking of getting a SCSI flash-card reader of
some description and
sticking a 64Mb card in there as I would hope it'll be more reliable than a
small (old) harddrive..
Now that gives me an interesting idea: USB-SCSI converter and a USB key.
They are now available in comfortable sizes for the S-7x0 series samplers.
I wonder if they can be reformatted by the sampler? That would be much
more convenient than hulking big external SCSI enclosures. [I'd also
like to see someone invent a nifty converter that would allow USB keys
to be used in the M-64C slots of the old Roland analog gear. Wishful
thinking, I know.]
Cheers,
