hello I have read that when an improper mouse has been plugged in that it can cause the
mouse port on the Roland SXXX to fail or no longer work properly. Is there an easy way to
fix this issue ?

Sadly that happened to me.
I plugged a "normal" mouse into my S550 and it fried whatever
component deals with the mouse. I now have to use the front panel
buttons.
I don't know of a fix for this - if you hear of anything, please let
me know....

Hallo Colin!
Normally the Roland samplers have a fuse resistor at the mouse port.
At least the S330 has it - I don't have the S550 schematics here so I can't
have
a look at that one. But I think it is the same.
Have a look at the attached schematics.
(Sorry the schematics will be killed for the group emails - ask me per private
email if you need it).
But the S50 doesn't have the fuse resistor and not the buffer between
the port and ASIC as you can see here:

Would it be possible to make a converter cable that would plug into
the S-330 and the other end of the cable would be USB to plug-in a
regular USB mouse? Was there a good reason why Roland designed it this
way, or was it to sell a propriety mouse?

There was a recent eBay auction where a guy was selling a USB to Serial mouse converter
with his S-550. He also claimed it would work on an S-760.
Search the completed listings, and maybe you could contact him for more info.

port in the first place. The S550 plug looks like a normal serial
port but apparently the connections are different.

An USB to serial converter should work with the S550/760?
Not is there is another serial to MSX mouse converter as the Roland S550/760
don't work with a serial mouse.
Believe me - I know. I designed mouse converters for the S550...
(see my webpage if interested).
The cheapest and quite up to date solution that works with mice that can be
bought today is a PS2-mouse to MSX converter. One of the designs has been done
by a Japanese person, but his webpage is not longer online or not reachable that
good. But you can load his design also from my mouse converter page. I already
built his interface on a prototype boards and it works well!
