Re your question:
Yes, you should have a MIDI keyboard or sequencer program attached 
(or both) in order to trigger the samples in each patch.

 He's right It's almost Impossible to use
without a monitor you can't 
see what your doing. I have a question myself. I don't know if you 
have the answer ! I just wanted to know if you have to hook up the 
samplier to midi to use sound samples. I've been working at this for 
some time. But to no avail as of yet. Help somepody
