As I understand, all available replacement boards are
from disassembled
used S-50 samplers.
The key question - what component tends to fault, because it's clear that
the problem is common now.
Jim Atwood mentioned that this could be related to a black resin coated
chip on the main CPU board. If chip is similar to juno 106 voice chips
there is no sense to exchange one board to another and wait when the
problem repeats.
I doubt the Roland service could advise something. I'll try to find what
the kind of chip is it.

I have the same issue with my S-50.
I have opened it up and checked all components, it looks good, but
looks are deceiving. I cleaned up the phono jacks and sprayed with air
and contact cleaner. No luck.
Someone had mentioned that the components go bad, like the capacitors
or transistors, and would need to be replaced. More work than I want
to invest in the S-50.
If you really want to get it working, there are some web sites where
you can buy replacement circuit boards.
Or just use it as an awesome MIDI controller. :)

Hello to all.
I have Roland S-50 sampler in nearly mint condition. Just one minor
issue:
periodic overload (overdrive) of output signal.
I've tested power/filter
board and it works fine. S-50 is equipped with multivoltage power supply
and I've tried 117 and 220V wirings but always is the same: every 7-8th
notes from S-50 are played distorted. The Visually sampler is in perfect
condition - all seems to work fine, there are no sights of burnt
components
inside. This problem exists on all outputs:
individual, phones, mix.
I've seen few mentions of similar issues in the internet:
http://www.vintagesynth.com/roland/s50.php and
....
Does
anybody know how to cope with this problem?
Thanks,
Alex Mylnikov
