Hi Chris,
as long as the CF reader does not require the use of SW drivers for its
operation, it will work. Unfortunately, not many readers does not require
this. We have had quite a lot of discussion regarding this on the EX5 forum
(
www.ex5tech.com) where a lot of different configurations have been tested.
The most sucessfull ones were using an IDE->scsi converter + a PCMCIA reader
(Addonics IDE Ultra Digidrive) + pcmcia adapter for CF (where the ide->scsi
card has its own drivers on-board). Other solutions uses the following items
for this to work (from ex5tech):

There are two ways to achieve the same results, but you do need the file.
Hopefully the EX5Tech team will post it soon. The components:
Option (A)
1) One Addonics IDE Ultra Digidrive (note 1)
2) One PCMCIA to CF1/CF2/SM/MS/SD/MMC/MD/XD adapter
3) One 21 cm (8 inches) long 40-conductor IDE-to-IDE adapter (note 2)
4) One ACARD AEC-7720U SCSI-to-IDE Bridge (note 3)
5) One 38 cm (15 inches) long 50-conductor SCSI cable with two 50-pin
connectors (note 4)
6) One power-cable adapter (note 5)
7) Anti-static wrist strap to ground yourself
8) Philips screwdriver to open the EX5R (a power tool is optional but not
necessary)
Option (B)
1) One Addonics IDE Ultra Digidrive (note 1)
2) One PCMCIA to CF1/CF2/SM/MS/SD/MMC/MD/XD adapter
3) One Storigen ACHIP ARC760-B SCSI-to-IDE Bridge (note 6)
4) One SCA 80-pin Female to 50-pin Male Internal SCSI Adapter
5) One 38 cm (15 inches) long 50-conductor SCSI cable with two 50-pin
connectors (note 4)
6) One power-cable adapter (note 5)
7) Anti-static wrist strap to ground yourself
8) Philips screwdriver to open the EX5R (a power tool is optional but not
necessary)

another thread regarding a cheaper way of doing it with only a scsi pcmcia
reader (no ide->scsi converter, etc):

you have another reference to samplers and flashmemory here:

Kind regards

All the bits I've been buying on ebay have turned
up and I will try to post
initial results tonight.... basically the idea is to see wether it is
feasible to use a SCSI-IDE adapter (Yamaha) attached to an IDE-Compact
Flash adapter with a CF card in it as a drive on S7nn series samplers.
Initial experiment will be with a JS30 as I have one set up at home, I will
also be trying it with an S750, and as a final shot will try to get an S750
to boot-load from it as well as hosting to the JS30 as a hard-drive..... ie
if I have both the JS30 and the S750 connected to it will it be able to
boot the S750, load in 18Mb to the S750 then load 4Mb into the JS30.....
Fingers crossed....
chrisc
