Has anyone experimented with using memory cards with a SCSI card reader on
the Roland S-series? This is an s760.
I have tried it with 2 SCSI card readers with a PCMCIA card to Compact
Flash adaptor and 32 m CF card and no luck. :(
Sampler cannot format the cards, so they can't be written to.
I'm wondering if this is hopeless, or if I should try to get an actual
PCMCIA memory card to try, thus eliminating the adaptor/CF card variable.
Anyone done ANYTHING like this before?

No, I haven't tried anything like this. But I'd like to make an
observation anyway...

I take it that it's a 32 megabyte card? That may be a bit on the small
side. The Roland S-760 OS has a fairly fixed structure when formatting
a hard disk and I assume that anything on the SCSI bus rather than the
floppy drive will be treated as a hard disk. This structure needs space
for the directory/table of contents. I don't recall how much space it
needs, but it might mean that the sampler will refuse to format anything
it considers too small.
OK, so that's largely speculation, but I wouldn't rule the idea out
based on a test with relatively small media.

and structure. The sampler is from an era where 100meg was a ton of
storage, and 40meg hard drives were commonplace.

Oh, I agree with that. I didn't really mean to imply that the overhead
would be that large, only that there was an overhead, and so there may
be a minimum size disk the OS supported. But, as you point out...
The s770 only had a 20 meg drive, and uses
interchangeable files with the
s760.
....so I guess we can assume that there is, in fact, some other
incompatibility preventing this from working.

As Bernie said, 32Mb is not a lot of memory, apart from other considerations.
I use a SCSI Zip drive and the 100Mb disks get filled up in no time at all.
I remember that Roland issued a list way back of compatible SCSI
drives and devices, but I doubt if media such as Compact Flash via
SCSI would make any sense to the Roland OS on the S760. You'd
probably be better off looking at a different solution altogether.
Just lateral thinking - sorry I can't be more specifically helpful.

New subject: Double-side double-density disks available
Apologies in advance for this post, but someone on the list asked for a
source for the old style 3X½" double sided, double density floppy disks.
I found my box of several hundreds of these. If anyone wants me to
send some out, please let me know.

A 256meg card is only $20.

CF/Sd/mmc (etc) with a PCMCIA adapter in a scsi reader (or ide->scsi reader
with hardware control) should look like a zip or equal to the sampler (i.e a
MO disc). If the S7X0 can see a zip, it should also be able to see a SCSI
reader. I use similar solutions with both my Yamaha A3000 and EX5R and don't
see why it should not work with Roland gear as well.

Should mention that i have used a zip for a very long time as well (since
96) but find it to unreliable ("click of death" anyone??). As stated before,
a non mechanical solution is better, especially if you use the gear in live
performances (imho)
