There was a recent eBay auction where a guy was selling a USB to Serial mouse converter
with his S-550. He also claimed it would work on an S-760.
Search the completed listings, and maybe you could contact him for more info.

Would it be possible to make a converter cable that would plug into the S-330 and the
other end of the cable would be USB to plug-in a regular USB mouse? Was there a good
reason why Roland designed it this way, or was it to sell a propriety mouse?

On the S-330, pin 5 of the ext control jack is
connected to +5V via > a fuse resistor. Don't know for the S-550, but since
it's the same > mouse, it's probably just the same here. You could check the
voltage > on pin 5 (pin 9 is ground) with a voltmeter. If there's no voltage >
present, most probably the fuse resistor is blown. The schematic > says it's value
is 0.15 ohms.
