I just got an S-760 and it came with a nice sample collection as part of the sale, but
it's getting harder and harder to find the soundware for these samplers anymore.
Anyone interested in trading sounds? Please email me....

Sorry, it was not my intention to break any laws.
It is true that some of the soundware is impossible to find these days though.
I have seen many other synths where their patches become 'public domain' after
15 years on the market.
When you just can't find those sounds anymore and the creator is not selling them
anymore.
Anyway, I hope I have not offended anyone on this group.

That brings up a good question - if I buy a sample CD and fifteen years
later I try to contact the copyright owner and they are out of business, and
I make a good faith effort to find out who if anyone owns these rights but I
can't find anything, can I not distribute these samples for free to other
users? You may even have the right to sell them to anyone who wants to buy
them from you, but I assume that's not what you are trying to do.

I personally think that if a company isn't around anymore, then there
no real harm in making a couple of copies.
No loss of sales = no real victim.
While maybe not technically 100% legal, we need to apply common sense

Nope. What is someones, stays someones. I think the legal provident
of this is 70 years for public domain, but I don't really know.

Why not trade sounds. The only thing you have to worry about is people
complaining. I doubt that's going to happen. Just go ahead and trade away.

There's a lot that can happen. There are crimes that are obvious,
like murder, stealing, etc. There are ones that aren't, like piracy.
Piracy wears down an industry.
When it comes to sound development, it's even worse - the M.I.
industry is small as it is. Musicians live off rice and beans (no
kidding). Those sounds you are trading were developed by someone who
counts on them to provide money that they live on, money to pay their
mortgage, their health insurance.
I know that sounds sappy, but it's true - I know. I know these people.
So trade sounds that are yours, but don't trade copyrighted sounds -
that's up to someone to purchase and pay the appropriate price.
The problem with "it can't hurt anyone" is that everyone starts
thinking that way and then you have a bigger problem. Better yet to
"do the right thing".

I find Roland S-7x CD's very easily - EatWest and QUpArts have them
still for sale on their sites. Roland I believe still sells their CD's.
Sure, it's a little harder find the sounds, but the good news is that
they are less expensive. Additionally (company plug here) you can use
Translator www.chickensys.com to convert into Roland S-7x format from
any other format, so you aren't necessarily tied into just Roland format.

Did this ever work? I remember they announced some kind of translation
support for S-7XX but the last I knew it still wasn't available. So
Chickensys will allow you to create a Roland format CD from an Akai format
or better, from a CD of wav. Samples?

Yes, it's been in there for awhile.

Our upcoming Constructor will really work well for this. It's a
generic Instrument Builder where you can build your own Instrument,
then export it to Roland format. You can also import in a Roland
Patch or Performance, edit it, and write it back.
Essentially a graphic editor for the S-7x.
